China Water’s major shareholder is Cascal (www.cascal.co.uk) which is part of the Biwater Group. Biwater (www.biwater.com) is a privately owned British company. Although formally founded in 1968 the history of companies acquired by Biwater can be traced to the early part of the last century, giving the company more than 100 years of experience in the water sector. The Biwater group is involved in the design, construction, ownership and long term operation of water and wastewater infrastructure all around the world. Biwater has a history of providing over 1000 water and wastewater systems in more than 90 countries around the world, in most cases working in conjunction with a local partner. With an annual turnover of around US$400m, the company currently employs over 4,500 personnel trained and dedicated to the service of the water industry, both in the UK, in China and internationally.
Cascal is a majority owned subsidiary of Biwater, focusing on the ownership and long term operation of water infrastructure. Cascal is a market leader its sector with more than 16 project companies in 8 countries spread across 4 continents. Cascal’s philosophy is always to attain operational excellence in all of its ventures and there are many examples of successfully implemented improvement strategies in a number of locations around the world (including China).
Cascal has ambitious growth plans and purchased a majority share in China Water in 2006 in order to use the company as a platform to develop in the Chinese water market.
The China Water Company Limited (www.chinawater.com.hk) was founded in 1996 by the Australian International Development Corporation. The company is a pioneer in the planning, financing, development, operation and management of water and wastewater projects in China. Previously majority owned by RWE Thames Water,
today the company is majority owned by Cascal (which is part of the Biwater Group ) with 87% of the equity.
Historically, China Water has been involved in 9 major projects in China with a total capacity of over 1600 Mld. We have experience in all the commonly used contract formats such as BOT, TOT, BOO, BOOT, O and M etc and have our own financial resources for the purpose of making equity investments. Today, under Cascal’s ownership, China Water has embarked on an expansion phase in the Chinese water market in order to quickly build on its portfolio of four existing operational projects.
