Perfection was founded as Perfection Gear Company in 1918 by David Daskal in Cicero, IL. The company began manufacturing replacement gears for the automotive industry. The business grew and moved to a new 200,000-square-foot facility in Harvey, IL. Perfection added industrial transmission parts and equipment through the acquisition of American Stock Gear in 1948. By 1964 the company\'s markets had spread throughout the U.S. and the company was renamed Perfection American to portray a stronger, more diversified company image.
In 1965 Perfection American constructed a new 300,000-square-foot plant in Darlington, SC and moved all manufacturing to this facility from Harvey, IL. Employment levels grew to more than 800 employees, with 625 located in Darlington and 175 administrative employees remaining in Harvey.
With the growth of the company and pressures from increasing competition came the need for more cash, and the company was sold in 1969 to Rex Chainbelt. The new owners closed the Harvey facility in 1970 and consolidated all functions in Darlington. The American Stock Gear Division was sold and the company continued to operate at reduced employment levels until it became a member of The Marmon Group in 1974. Sales at that time were $13 million and employment totaled 400.
The company began broadening its product and market coverage in 1978 by starting a clutch cover assembly remanufacturing plant in Santa Fe Springs, CA. In December 1980 Perfection acquired a clutch, alternator, starter and water pump remanufacturer, HY-Test, in Purcell, OK and in 1982, another rebuilding company, Unit Parts Exchange in Long Beach, CA. In 1983 the Santa Fe Springs facility was consolidated with Long Beach, and Perfection started another rebuilding operation in Graham, NC.
Perfection sold its Darlington plant and equipment in 1985 and rented a large warehouse to serve as a distribution center for purchased gear products. In the same year, a fire destroyed this facility and its gear inventory. After the fire, the company began leasing a 56,000-square-foot facility in Lamar, SC and began to re-establish a distribution center for gear products.
Perfection sold its Long Beach facility in 1987 and transferred production and distribution to the Purcell, OK and Graham, NC operations. Perfection acquired a Lakeland, FL rebuilder of alternators and starters in 1989 and in 1990 added a complete line of new clutches to complement the rebuilt clutch program.
With the growing competitive environment, Perfection began searching the world for opportunities to reduce costs. This led the company into China where Perfection developed quality products by working together with the Chinese, at cost savings significantly below previous suppliers. To keep pace with the growing opportunities, Perfection established an office in Shanghai in 1994 to continue to explore the Chinese market for other opportunities. This led to the creation of a joint venture company called Ningbo Hongxie Machinery Manufacturing Company Ltd., established in 1996 to manufacture new clutch discs and cover assemblies. Perfection had a 78 percent controlling interest in Ningbo Hongxie.
To streamline operations, in 1997 Perfection constructed a 181,080-square-foot facility in Timmonsville, SC and consolidated all operations from Graham, NC, Lakeland, FL, Lamar, SC and Florence, SC.
In 1999, Perfection exited the rotating electrical (alternators and starters) market. The Purcell, OK facility was closed and all clutch operations were consolidated in Timmonsville, SC.
In 2004, Perfection sold its 78 percent interest in Ningbo Hongxie Machinery Manufacturing Company. The company continues to source product with Ningbo but for strategic reasons, does not hold an equity interest in the company.
On December 25, 2007 Berkshire-Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett and Tom Pritzker, Chairman of Marmon Holdings announced that Berkshire would purchase 60% of Marmon Holdings, Inc. Perfection is one of the one hundred and twenty-five companies held by Marmon Holdings, Inc.
The closing occurred in the first quarter of 2008. The remaining 40% will be acquired through staged acquisitions over a five to six year period for consideration to be based on the future earnings of Marmon.
In December of 2008, Perfection announced an agreement with Affinia Group Inc (Ann Arbor, MI) to acquire the clutch hydraulic business from Affinia\'s Global Brake and Chassis business unit.
In January 2010, Perfection formed Perfection de Mexico with LODI Automotive. With controlling interest in this joint venture Perfection has been able to grow it sales into the Mexican market.
In July 2010 Perfection Shanghai Autoparts Inc. was formed. Located in a Shanghai free trade zone this facility functions as quick turn kitting facility that feeds finished product into North America.
