With a friend, he began to charter sailing boats and founded Azimut. A year later, at the Genoa Boat Show, Amerglass, then the most modern boatyard in Europe, decided to give Azimut the concession for Amerglass in Italy. This was the first big step. In contrast, 1977 saw the production of AZ 32 Targa, the smallest boat for safe cruising on a limited budget. This boat proved so successful it was dubbed the “Model T Ford” of the seas. Between 1977 and 1985, the company enjoyed constant growth. Every success opened the door to a new challenge. Like the one with the Kuwaiti prince, won over by Paolo Vitelli with a simple sketch: this was the future Failaka 105’, the first 30-metre yacht in boating history to be built out of fibreglass. Azimut arrived in the US market aboard this prestigious mega yacht: it took part in the Miami Boat Show for the first time in 1982 and thanks to the entrepreneurial know-how of its founder, led to a dealership contract with Winthrop Rockefeller ’s Allied Marine as its American agent. A new challenge soon appeared on the horizon: entering the yacht construction business. With the acquisition of the Fratelli Benetti yard in Viareggio in 1985, the Azimut | Benetti Group was created. In 1988, Azimut | Benetti threw itself into winning the Blue Ribbon, the challenge to cross the transatlantic without refuelling.
