马来西亚石油公司成立于1974年，属于国有企业。由马来西亚政府全面拥有。并获有国会通过石油开发法令，授予拥有和控制马来西亚石油资源的所有权利。公司被指定为马来西亚境内所有石油和天然气的开发公司，并被要求对这些资源进行增值加工处理。马来西亚石油公司已经从它成立之初的单纯石油天然气开采企业成长成为现在的业务范围广泛的在多个方面有增值能力的实体。
通过三十年的发展建设，马石油已经成长为一家综合性的跨国石油天然气公司，属下拥有三家子公司（马石油贸易有限公司、马石油天然气有限公司和马来西亚国际船务有限公司），并在海外三十几个国家设有100多家子公司，被列为世界500强。
马石油管理所有马来西亚境内的上游作业，并通过生产共享合同聘用多家国际石油与天然气公司参与勘探、开发及生产马来西亚的石油与天然气。马石油也通过子公司马石油勘探有限公司直接参与马来西亚上游亿立方尺的天然气储备。马石油的下游作业包括液化天然气和运输业、加工和输送天然气、提炼和推销石油产品、买卖原油和石油产品、制造和销售石油化学产品，以及船运和相关的后勤，如运输液化天然气、原油和石油产品等。
PETRONAS was incorporated on 17 August 1974 as the national oil company of Malaysia, vested with the entire ownership and control of the petroleum resources in the country. It has since grown from merely being the manager and regulator of Malaysia’s upstream sector into a fully integrated oil and gas corporation, ranked among the FORTUNE Global 500？ largest corporations in the world.
