The orchestra and the season
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra became a professional orchestra in January 1974. We employ 89 contract musicians. The majority of the players are Chinese, British and American, and there are players from Canada, Poland, Australia, Japan and India as well. The season consists of 44 or 45working weeks, followed by 8 weeks summer vacation. Apart from giving subscription concerts in several concert halls, the orchestra also accompany opera and ballet performances, give family concerts, pops/fund-raising concerts, schools and educational concerts and make recordings. Duration for each service is either 2-1/2 hours or 3 hours and there are usually 8 services in a week. The Orchestra made tours to the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan ,Singapore, Thailand, China, Korea, Taiwan and Macau in the last 15 years.
