In 1997 the British Government created the Department for International Development (DFID) which in China operates as the Development Section of the British Embassy. Aid work in China prior to this date had focused upon providing loans for trade projects. DFID however has an entirely new remit focused upon helping eliminate poverty. To do this, aid policy has switched to providing grant funding. In 1998 a new strategy for work in China was agreed and since May 1999 a new office has been set up in Beijing to help implement this strategy.
The post holder will join a team of 6 international staff and 7 Chinese staff working in the DFID office. Collectively the team will manage and administer the in-country activities of the UK development programme in China. Working in the health, education, economic, legal and environmental sectors, the office will maintain foster and strengthen close links between the London-based DFID staff covering China aid policy and partners and other organisations in China.
